Okomfo Anokye’s Sword Vrs King Arthur’s Excalibur: Truth vrs Myths

Dear All,

The greatest problem is not ignorance but false education; to be ignorant will trigger one’s curiosity but to be wrongly educated will make one live with lies and assume that is the truth. Most Africans (continental and diasporas) have been heavily miseducated about many things and this has caused many to ignore the African truths while embracing foreign lies. Today we shall compare African truth and European myth: Okomfo Anokye’s Sword vrs King Arthur’s Excalibur.

Who is Okomfo Anokye and his sword?

Okomfo is a TWi word for Priest. Twi is a language spoken by the Akans in Ghana, Africa. Okomfo Anokye (birth name is Kwame Frimpong) was born in the late 1600s in Awukugua-Akuapim, in the Eastern Region of Ghana. His father, Ano, was from the Awukugua-Akuapim part of the Ayade Tribe and mother, Yaa Anubea, was an Agona Clan member. In olden Gold Coast, the Agona Clan (with parrot as totem) were the rulers and leaders of the Akan group. As a member of Agona Clan (from maternal lineage), Okomfo Anokye was made Sumankwahene (Chief Priest) of Denkyira Kingdom due to his supernatural abilities. With time, he broke ties with Denkyira due to an unfortunate happenstance. He later allied with Osei Tutu I.

In 1698-1671, Okomfo Anokye helped Osei Tutu I to establish the Asante Kingdom after defeating Denkyira in the Battle of Feyiase. He was very skilled in social engineering. He helped Osei Tutu I to institute measures to unite the Asante Chiefs and strengthen the Kingdom. One of such acts was the planting of a sword in the ground at Bantama in Kumasi, Ghana. He promised that nobody can pull out the sword from the ground. He further said the sword symbolises the unity of the Asante Kingdom. A day the sword would be pulled from the ground, Asante kingdom would be disintegrated. Even the legendary boxer, Mohammed Ali, tried to pull out the sword on his visit to Ghana but failed. The sword was said to have disappeared when European civil engineers tried to excavate it during the building of Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi in 1954.

Who is King Arthur and his sword?

King Arthur Pendragon is a legendary British king who appears in a cycle of medieval romance stories as the sovereign of a knightly fellowship of the Round Table. Arthur obtained the British throne by pulling a sword from an anvil sitting atop a stone that appeared in a churchyard on Christmas Eve. In this account, the act could not be performed except by “the true king,” meaning the divinely appointed king or true heir of Uther  Pendragon. As Malory’s writes: “Whoso pulleth out this sword of this stone and anvil, is rightwise king born.

According to Encyclopaedia Britannica, it is not certain how these legends originated or whether the figure of Arthur was based on a historical person. This is because Geoffrey of Monmouth’s 1136 book History of the Kings of Britain was in a fictional form with the title Caliburnus. Some ancient poems, such as Conte du Graal, written by poet Chretien de Troyes around 1160, didn’t attribute Excalinur to Arthur. Conte du Graal attribute Excalibur as a belonging of Sir Gawain, who was the son of Arthur’s sister, Morgause, also sometimes referred to as Anna. Supposedly, Arthur loaned the sword to Sir Gawain, his most trusted and loyal knight, but it was returned to King Arthur for his battle with Mordred.

King Arthur’s Excalibur

According to Malory, Excalibur was given to Arthur by the Lady of the Lake near Bodmin Moor at the request of Merlin, Arthur’s magical adviser. Most legends agree that Arthur battled his nephew Mordred. Mordred was killed after wounding Arthur. Thus Arthur advised his knights that Excalibur must be returned to the Lady of the Lake. Excalibur was thrown back into the lake by Sir Bedevere, another trusted knight of the Round Table, and was never seen again.

CONCLUSION

All supernatural stories from Africa have physical evidences to support them unlike European versions. European legends are mostly given conclusions that will make them impossible to get evidence to validate the claims. To date, Okomfo Anokye’s Sword is there to prove to the whole world that African stories are not lies. But where can we find King Arthur’s Sword if not in movies?

Africa is the birthplace of mankind and original source of true supernatural happenings. Africans at home must embrace their culture and spirituality because all European supernatural stories are just cooked lies. Africans in the diaspora must also visit Africa to see for themselves whether the lies told about Africa by the Western world are true or not.

We need to wake up as people to see the lies and miseducation surrounding us. Thank you very much.
